New Recreation Spaces For Davis Islands, Tampa

New and improved recreation areas are in the works for Davis Islands residents.

A public meeting for Roy Jenkins Pool, at 154 Columbia Dr., is being held on Thursday, June 16, at 5:30 p.m. at the Davis Islands Garden Club, at 81 Columbia Dr. in Tampa. Contract administration and consultants from Fleischman Garcia Architecture will be available to present design plans and improvements, as well as answer questions.

"We really need to understand user demands and recreational programming needs," says Laurie Potier-Brown, project manager for the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department.

After completing a study on spaces available for recreation use on the island, along with Roy Jenkins Pool improvements, a public workshop was held this past October where the study was made available for resident viewing.

"Residents were given an opportunity to comment on study concepts and give recommendations," says Potier-Brown. "Their voices were able to be heard before decisions for project improvements were made."

The $50,000 study was funded by the Davis Islands Capital Improvement Fund and focused on the area stretching from the Sandra Freeman Tennis Center, at 59 Columbia Dr., to Bayshore Little League fields, at 181 Columbia Dr., approximately half a mile down the road; the area included recreational facilities such as Marjorie Park Marina and Roy Jenkins Pool.

The study also took a look at the speculation of costs for a kiddie splash area, baseball park, kiddie park and a community kiosk on Davis Island. An evaluation of parking, pedestrian connections and meeting spaces was also included.

Existing conditions of the pool were documented while the study evaluated the requirements needed to meet current Department of Health codes.
