Awesome Tampa Bay Picks Flower Seeding Project

The third $1,000 grant from Awesome Tampa Bay goes to Tampa architect Ken Cowart for his Bomb the Medians flower seeding project.

Cowart submitted an application to Awesome Tampa Bay explaining what he would do with the money. Here is an excerpt from his application:

“Today it seems like the only way to get from point A to point B is in your or a friend’s car. We rush from parking lot to parking lot with little time to stop and smell the flowers. In fact the only time we stop is at one of the several ill-timed stop lights. Then what is there to stop and look at or appreciate? A half maintained sidewalk, a roadway median covered in weeds?

“I propose to ‘bomb the medians’. That is, use flower seed bombs to plant flowers along Tampa’s major corridors and primarily at those long red-lights; giving the citizens of Tampa an opportunity to stop and smell the flowers.”

The latest prize was awarded May 3 at an evening event held at Studio@620.

At the same event, T. Hampton Dohrman who co-founded Awesome Tampa Bay, revealed that another chapter of awesomeness will be opening in the Tampa Bay region.

“We are expanding and opening a St. Pete chapter,” Dohrman says. “We will be offering $1,000 Awesome St. Petersburg grants.”

The first application deadline for the Awesome St. Petersburg grant is July 1, 2012, and the winner will be announced before August 1, 2012.

Awesome Tampa Bay is a philanthropic organization that gives $1,000 grants to local citizens who submit innovative ideas that will benefit the community.
