Marriott Moxy Hotel coming to The Heights in Tampa

Marriott International Moxy Hotel brand is the big-name addition to the next phase of The Heights District mixed-use development along the Hillsborough River.

A 150-room Moxy will span seven floors of a 25-story mixed-use tower set to start construction in early 2020. The hotel is scheduled for opening in 2022. Marriott describes The Moxy brand as a boutique hotel with “an appetite for adventure.” The lifestyle hotel is designed to appeal to a younger crowd looking for fun with offerings like a late-night bar, lobbies described as a “living rooms with bartenders,” and “white-hot” Wi-Fi.

“It was determined during our initial research that a hotel was not only wanted but also needed as part of The Heights District,” Heights District and Armature Works co-developer Chas Bruck says in an email. “However, it was imperative that we find the right hotel partner that really speaks to the type of person that we believe will benefit most from everything we have to offer. The Moxy Hotel is that perfect fit. We wanted a fun, unique boutique hotel that would not only provide that same experience but also fit into who we are. We also knew that this type of hotel, one that promotes engagement and interaction outside your hotel room, would fill a specific void in this market.”

In a news release, a Marriott executive says the company has kept its eye on the opportunities presented by the rapid transformation of the 50-acre area anchored by Armature Works just north of downtown.

“Over the past few years, I’ve been watching the evolution of the up-and-coming Tampa Heights District as it becomes a trendy place to work, live and play,” says Tim Sponsler, the VP of Marriott Lodging Development for Florida. “The development of Armature Works is a great example of the edgy vibe of the neighborhood and the development of the Moxy Hotel will have synergy with the overall vibrant lifestyle experience of The Heights District.”

The 25-story tower will be between West Oak Avenue and West Seventh Avenue and North Highlands and North Tampa Street. Above the Moxy, there will be apartments that have a separate lobby from the hotel.

The first part of the tower to open, in late 2020, will be a parking garage with 1,500 spaces and 9,000 square feet of retail. The Moxy itself will have 5,000-square-feet of retail space and the development of the full block will include 30,000 square feet of additional retail by the time it is completed in 2022.
