The Confucius Institute recently approved the first Confucius Classroom in Florida, sponsored by the University of South Florida.
Thurgood Marshall Fundamental Middle School in St. Petersburg will receive start-up funds, learning materials and an annual operating budget of $10,000 to host the classroom.
Students at the Pinellas County school have had the opportunity to learn Mandarin -- in addition to French, Italian and Spanish -- since 2008.
